Bora Bora is a French Polynesia island and one of the most expensive.

It is also is one of the Pacific’s most popular tourist destinations.

The South Pacific is made up of 118 islands covering over 6,400 square Kilometers. Soaring volcanic peaks, rugged cliffs, and emerald lagoons provide some of the South Pacific’s most spectacular scenery. These islands are where you find those picturesque bungalows on stilts over blue lagoons. It’s a tropical paradise. Due to their remoteness and their appeal to celebrities and honeymooners, the islands are an expensive destination to visit.

We had arranged to hire a car and undertake an island tour with Kathrin & Atanas. Again we had to tender but were in the first boat and this time everything was familiar to me. As soon as we left the tender we headed for the Avis car rental building. We were too early and had to wait until 8.00 a.m. for the office to open. The young lady had a car for us and shortly thereafter we set off on our tour. The island is not big so we were able to make many stops and after approx. 1 hour I also was able to fly my drone.

Our next stop was Mama Ruta. By the side of the road, you can see the Pareos exposed in the trees. We were made very welcome in this small family business.We tasted some local fruits and purchased several Pareos which were being made and sold at an extremely good price.

We continued our journey around the island stopping to take photos at various lookout points and finally arrived at a hotel that we remembered from our previous tour. A beautiful hotel as one would expect on Bora Bora with picturesque bungalows on stilts over a blue lagoon and a beautiful white sand beach adjoining. I asked if it would be possible to use the facilities if we drank and ate something. I was informed that we would need a day pass which included meals and use of the pool with towels etc. I explained that we had been guests in 2015 but only had a few hours to spare this time and asked if it was possible just to use the beach facilities as we had our own towels. My request received a smile and a positive reply. We were all thrilled as we enjoyed our swim in the beautiful lagoon and the use of the facilities. After about 2 hours we continued our travels. On our way back to the ship we spotted an abandoned pearl farm. Atanas and I took a closer look and found it most interesting and I went back for Peter. On leaving the area I was unfortunately stung by some flying insect and my ankle began to swell very fast. It also became painful to put weight on that foot. Back in our cabin Kathrin organised ice and Doctor Peter fixed me up with ice wraps. Everything was fine again after a few hours. Peter and I went to the end of our deck at the back of the boat to watch a wonderful sail away by beautiful weather conditions from Bora Bora. Another wonderful experience on our “World Travels”.

The commune of Bora-Bora is made up of the island of Bora Bora proper with its surrounding islets emerging from the coral reef, 29.3 km²(11.3 sq mi) in total. The surrounding islets include many smaller Motus.

The island's economy is driven almost solely by tourism. Several resorts have been built on motu (small islands, from Tahitian) surrounding the lagoon. 

Hotel Bora Bora opened in 1961, and nine years later built the first over-the-water bungalows  on stilts over the lagoon. Today, over-water bungalows are a standard feature of most Bora Bora resorts. The quality of those bungalows ranges from comparably cheap, basic accommodations to very luxurious and expensive places to stay.

Public transport on the island is nonexistent so rental cars and bicycles are the recommended methods of transport. There are also small, two-seater buggies for hire in Vaitape. It is possible to rent a motorboat to explore the lagoon.

Snorkeling and scuba diving in and around the lagoon of Bora Bora are popular activities.

09.12.2017 Bora Bora
Wir haben uns bereits um 6.00 Uhr wecken lassen. Nach dem Frühstück besorgten wir uns die notwendigen Tenderboat-tickets und Ruck Zuck saßen wir im Boot zur Anlegestelle.
Wir hatten uns für heute mit Kathrin und Atanas für eine Inselentdeckungsfahrt auf eigene Faust verabredet. Linda konnte sich noch 100 %ig an die von uns beim letzten mal gewählte Anmietungs-station für unseren damalig gemieteten Roller erinnern und eilte schon in die Richtung. Dieses Mal wollten wir ein Auto mieten und die ersten sein. Da die Autovermietung erst um 08.00 Uhr öffnete mussten wir 20 Minuten warten. Das offizielle war schnell erledigt und schon konnten wir starten. Wir ließen uns sehr viel Zeit für die kurze Strecke um die Insel und stoppten bei jeder Gelegenheit die sich für ein Fotostopp eignete. Unterwegs haben wir uns Zeit genommen um die Drohne wieder fliegen zu lassen. Kathrin & Atanas haben die Umgebung erkundigt während Linda sich der Drohne widmete und Traumaufnahmen machen konnte.

Im Soffitel Hotel legten wir eine 2 stündige Pause ein. Dank Linda's Verhandlungsgeschick konnten wir den Hotel eigenen Strandabschnitt mit bequemen Liegen und Duschen nutzten. Am letzten Stopp kam es zu einem Ereignis auf das wir hätten verzichten können. Es war ein verlassen aussehendes Grundstück auf dem viele bunte Fotomotive standen. Im hinteren Bereich entdeckten Linda und Atanas ein kleines Wasserbecken in dem offensichtlich Perlen gezüchtet wurden. Überall hingen Muscheln an Kordeln aufgehängt. Beim verlassen der Anlage über einen kleinen Steg wurde Linda von einem Insekt in den Fuß gestochen. Die Stelle schwoll sofort an und das auftreten schmerzte. Zurück an Bord kühlten wir die Stelle mit Eis was zur Linderung der Schwellung beitrug. Zur Sicherheit entschieden wir uns die Ärztin drauf schauen zu lassen. 
Am nächsten Tag war die Schwellung deutlich zurückgegangen und Linda konnte wieder normal auftreten. 

Infos: Bora Bora zählt geografisch zu dem Archipel der Gesellschaftsinseln.

Das Atoll liegt rund 260 km nordwestlich von Tahiti und hat eine Landfläche von insgesamt 38 km². Bora Bora gilt als einer der exklusivsten und luxuriösesten Urlaubsorte in der oberen Preisklasse und gehört zu den teuersten Reisezielen der Welt.

Mehrere Luxushotels liegen auf den Motus des Saumriffes und bieten sogenannte Überwasser-Bungalows an, die auf Stelzen in die Lagune hineingebaut sind. Durch eine gläserne Tischplatte hindurch kann man beim Frühstück, das mit Auslegerkanus gebracht wird, die bunten Korallenfische beobachten. Bora Bora wird inzwischen häufig von Kreuzfahrtschiffen angelaufen, oft im Rahmen ihrer Weltumfahrungen.

Hauptattraktion auf Bora Bora ist die Lagune mit ihrer noch weitgehend intakten Unterwasserwelt.

Eine weltbekannte Attraktion für Taucher ist die „Rochenstraße“, ein Bereich in der Lagune, in dem verschiedene Rochenarten in großen Schwärmen vorkommen, darunter zahlreiche Mantas und Leopard-Stechrochen.

Es folgten jetzt 4 See-Tage nach Neuseeland

Am Abend des 2 See-tages wurde etwas verfrüht das überfahren der Datumsgrenze gefeiert. Soll heißen bisher stellten wir seit Praia immer mal wieder unsere Uhren um eine Stunde zurück bis hin zu

11 Stunden Differenz. Mit dem Überfahren der Datumsgrenze fiel dann vom 10.Dez auf den 11.Dez der Tag komplett weg so das wir sogleich in den 12 Dez. waren. Von da an waren wir nicht mehr hinter der MEZ sondern sind jetzt 12 Stunden vor der MEZ.

Gestern Abend haben wir dann noch im Theater das Bergfest bei netter Musik und mit einigen Leckereinen aus der Küche und einem Glas Sekt begangen.

Morgen am 15.12.2017 gegen 13.00 Uhr werden wir Neuseeland erreichen wo wir für 15 Tage das Schiff wieder verlassen um unsere Freunde Helen und Fred zu treffen und mit ihnen 5 Tage gemeinsam die Nordinsel zu erkunden und anschließend nach Australien fliegen und auch dort unsere Erkundungen fortsetzten. Über die Weihnachtstage werden wir bei den beiden zu Hause sein.
